Tipping is a big industry and in some countries it is the only way to make sure the concierge doesn’t loose your bags and that you don’t have to wait two hours in a restaurant for your meal.

The Americans are of course the masters of tipping and they are welcomed around the world because of their generosity towards the service industry. In America, many employees are on minimum wage and they need and rely on the tips to survive, their wage is not enough to pay their bills.

Therefore, the limo hire companies reward their chauffeurs well and pay them much more than the minimum wage to do their job well, actually better than well. However, some limo hire companies encourage their passengers to tip the chauffeurs to ensure the chauffeurs provide good service. The limousine industry is outraged at this because the chauffeur should be providing the best possible service regardless of the tip received from the passenger.

While most people realise that the cultures around the world are different to our own, we simply research the customs of countries we are headed to for a holiday or business trip so that we can respect them.

We don’t however insist on bringing all of those customs back with us and while tipping in the US is a serious business, the limousine hire companies here in the UK should not be lowering themselves by working to rule.

So when you are hiring a limousine for your special occasion, make sure that you will be receiving the best possible service from your chauffeur without having to carry a wad of one-pound notes.
